NAIROBI, Nov.19 (Xinhua) -- Kenya plans to reduce emissions from the aviation sector in order to promote environmental sustainability, the civil aviation regulator said on Monday.

Gilbert Kibe, director general of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), told Xinhua in Nairobi that all airlines operating in the country have volunteered to implement the Kenya Action Plan for the reduction of carbon dioxide gas emissions in the aviation sector.

"We are encouraging airlines to implement measures to reduce carbon footprint of the aviation such as improving aircraft fuel efficiency," Kibe said.

He noted that the aviation sector will also begin to monitor, evaluate and quantify greenhouse gas emissions that they produce and come up with measures to mitigate them through global market based measures known as Carbon offsetting and Reduction scheme for international aviation (CORSIA).

Other measures Kenya is putting in place to address greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation sector include encouraging development of sustainable bio fuel policy.

According to KCAA, Kenya was one of the first countries in Africa to develop an action plan for promoting a green aviation sector.
