BANGKOK, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- World No. 6 United States swept world No. 12 Canada 3-0 here on Monday to meet Turkiye in the quarterfinals of the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship.
Avery Skinner and Sarah Franklin had 13 points apiece and Madisen Skinner added 12 as the American women clinched the 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 victory in 71 minutes.
"We are feeling really good. We are trying to get to the gym every day and just work to be better and better, and that's going to show in the game. It's super exciting for us and we are continuing to push that," said Franklin, who recorded nine smashes and three kill blocks. "Having the USA jersey on is always an honor and it is what pushes us to do better and better."
The United States reaped a total of 11 points from blocking, compared to six for the Canadians, who were spearheaded by Anna Smrek's 12 points.
"I think this entire summer was a big part about learning and growing, and trying to just grow our skill set. A lot of us are new to this whole experience - VNL, World Championship. I think in terms of the long-term goals over the summer, to get to the round of 16 is great," said Smrek.
Later on Monday, Melissa Teresa Vargas had 20 points and Eda Erdem added 17 to lead Turkiye over Slovenia 30-28, 25-13, 29-27. ■
