WARSAW, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Argentina's men's volleyball team sealed its first title at the Hubert Wagner Memorial tournament, defeating host nation Poland 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24) in the final round on Sunday evening in Krakow.
Marcelo Mendez's men had put themselves just one step away from winning the trophy after having beaten Brazil and Serbia without dropping a set.
Argentina began Sunday's match with confidence, establishing an early lead in the opening set. A decisive spike from Luciano Palonsky secured the first set 25-20.
Led by Wilfredo Leon, who contributed six points including two aces, Poland responded in the second set and leveled the match at one set apiece.
Argentina regained control in the third set for a 25-19 win. Manuel Armoa emerged as a key figure, adding six points as Poland struggled in attack.
In a closely contested fourth set, Poland appeared poised to force a tiebreak after Marcin Komenda's block earned it a 22-20 lead. But Argentina showed resilience afterwards, and Agustin Loser's decisive block on Szymon Jakubiszak sealed the set 26-24.
Brazil claimed the silver medal with two wins, while Poland finished third and Serbia ended in fourth place after three straight losses. ■
